has to Play Role of Watchdog for Poverty Reduction

Calling
upon the journalists to play role of watchdog to
ensure the transparency and effectiveness of
poverty reduction activities of the Government and
non-government organizations, speakers said, media
has to play active role to raise public opinion
for and against success and failure of these
activities.
Media
experts and journalist leaders expressed this
opinion while addressing a two-day media
consultation on Challenges of Poverty Reporting
held in Rajshahi today. Mass communication
oriented international organization PANOS
Institute and CCD Bangladesh jointly organized
this consultation. Mass communication experts and
NGO leaders said, in spite of many criticism and
obstacles, non-government organizations have been
working hard in different levels for poverty
reduction. Highlighting the failures and lacking
of the organizations along with their success and
achievement, journalists have to make the NGO
activists more responsible and accountable to the
people
Calling
upon to utilize the donation and fund of the donor
agencies for poverty reduction programs, speakers
said, we have to get rid of the corrupt policy of
a certain section and the politicians and policy
makers have to work sincerely for the development
of the marginal people. Only mass media can ensure
their responsibility and accountability trough
bringing out their irregularities and corruption,
they added.

Rajshahi University (RU) Dulal Chandra Biswas,
Executive Editor of the Daily Sonali Sangbad
Molazzem Hossain Sachchu and General Secretary of
Swa-Unnayan and Rajshahi Correspondent of the
Bangladesh Observer Mustafizur Rahman Khan Alom as
Panel Discussant addressed the meeting held at
UPHCP Training Room of RCC. Country Representative
of Panos South Asia S M Mayeen Ahmed presented
welcome address while CCD Director G M Mourtoza
conducted the function. Representatives of local
and national newspapers and electronic media and
local non-government organizations actively took
part in the open discussion.
